Utila : Dive Honduras

Utila (a.k.a. Isla de Utila) is the smallest of Honduras’ three major Bay Islands, after Roatán and Guanaja. It lies in the Caribbean Sea at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest reef system in the world.

Utila was first documented on Columbus’ fourth voyage, and the modern people of Utila are of African (Garifuna), English, and Dutch descent.

Today, the small island enjoys a bustling tourism scene with an emphasis on recreational scuba diving and is known as one of the world’s best dive locations.

An Excerpt from the Book

“Once Simon splashed into the cool water, and submerged himself in the quiet, azure depths, he would become completely at ease, floating effortlessly through the spellbinding world below the surface. It’s so peaceful down below.

He soon discovered that when he surfaced, the above-water world seemed comparatively loud, harsh and violent. Filled with a cacophony of deafening noises and constant worries about life and the future. Down below, however, none of that seemed to exist. Fish don’t know how good they have it.

He laughed at the crazy thought, but honestly felt a tad jealous.”

From the Author

“I’ve always been claustrophobic. The first time I visited Utila, it was with the simple intention of getting my scuba diving certification. I didn’t realize that when I first put on the equipment and went underwater in the shallow ocean, the claustrophobia would suddenly send me into a panic attack. Needless to say, I didn’t get certified that day. Years later, I would return to Utila to conquer my fear. I passed the certification course in a week. And scuba diving has been a cathartic hobby of mine for years now.”
